Julia Michaels ( Julia Carin Cavazos) is an American singer and songwriter. As a songwriter, Michaels has written songs for artists like Selena Gomez, Fifth Harmony, Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes, Britney Spears, Hailee Steinfeld, Justin Bieber, and Gwen Stefani. In addition to receiving two Grammy nominations, she also earned nomination for MTV Music Video, American Music Awards and Billboard Music.
Julia Carin Cavazos was born on November 13, 1993 in Davenport Iowa. Michaels grew up in Santa Clarita, California with her family including her older sister Jaden, also a songwriter. Michaels started singing at age 12. At the age of 14, she met songwriter Joleen Belle and with him, she wrote the theme song to Austin & Ally and many other songs for TV and film. She met Lindy Robbins at the age of 19 and she wrote “Fire Starter” for Demi Lovato and “Miss Movin’ On” for Fifth Harmony with her. From the age of 16, Michaels had been writing in the Hollywood Pop Circuits .
She met her songwriting partner Justin Tranter at the age of 20, with whom she frequently collaborates . Michaels is credited with writing hits for singers like Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Fifth Harmony. She performed ‘Carry Me’ alongside Norwegian musician Kygo at the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016.

Michaels signed with Republic Records in October 2016 . She released her debut solo single ‘Issues’ in January 2017. It made her one of the breakout artists of 2017. At the 2018 Grammy Awards, she earned nomination for two Grammys ; Best New Artist and Song of the Year for ‘Issues’. She also earned MTV Music Video Award, Billboard Music Award, and American Music Award nominations. Her new song “How Do We Get Back to Love” was premiered on the HBO series ‘Girls’ in April 2017. Also, She released ‘Nervous System’, her third EP overall and first through a major record label in 2017. Michaels and Tranter composed the track ‘Friends’. The track was later sung by BloodPop® and Justin Bieber. She headlined the Nervous System Tour in 2017 . She also opened for Shawn Mendes on the Oceania Leg of his Illuminate World Tour .
Her song “Heaven” released on February 8, 2018 which was included in the soundtrack for the film Fifty Shades Freed. “Jump” was released featuring Trippie Redd in 2018. Julia was the opening act for the European dates of Niall Horan’s Flicker World Tour and for Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues Tour on the North American leg . Also, She collaborated with Lauv on the single release, “There’s No Way” . Michaels opened for Keith Urban on the Australian leg of his Graffiti U World Tour from January 23 to February 5 2019. Michael released her song “What a Time” from her fourth EP, Inner Monologue Part 1 on January 24, 2019. She also began teasing songs from Inner Monologue Part 2, including “17” and “Falling for Boys” in 2019 . Michaels also appeared in the second season episode of Songland on May 11, 2020 . Then, she released the song “Give It to You”.

On October 2018, after a series of Instagram posts featuring each other and collaborating on “There’s No Way”, Michaels and Lauv confirmed their love relationship. After a couple of months, Michaels hinted that they have separated. Also, She posted on Instagram with the caption “No more dating narcissists”. In his song “Julia”, Lauv references his relationship with Michaels, where he apologizes for how he mistreated her.
Michaels started dating JP Saxe, a Canadian musician, in the beginning of 2020 . Their collaboration on the duet, “If the World Was Ending” ignited the relationship.
